If you’re like me and don’t know much about wine beyond red vs. white, don’t worry. You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy a wine trail. I went on a weekend wine trail with my fiance. It became one of the most fun and chill ways to spend a day. So, if you’ve ever wondered what a wine trail actually is, here’s the breakdown.
So, What Exactly Is a Wine Trail?
A wine trail is essentially a route that guides you through several wineries in a specific area. These establishments are typically located quite close to each other, allowing you to hop from one to the next and sample various wines along the way. Each stop offers wine tastings. This means you get to sample small pours of different types of wine. You do not have to buy a whole bottle. Some wineries also have food, live music, or even tours where they show you how wine is made.
The Outer Coastal plains AVA has the majority of wineries in our state. I would say that that’s a great place to do one. Some people make a whole weekend out of it. You can also just go for the day. You can hit a few spots.
Why Should You Go on One?
Even if you don’t consider yourself a “wine person,” a wine trail is worth checking out. Here’s why:
1. It’s More Than Just Wine – Sure, the wine is the main attraction. Still, these places are usually in beautiful spots. They offer amazing views. Perfect for relaxing or grabbing some Instagram-worthy photos.
2. It’s Affordable – Tastings usually cost around $10-$20, and you get to try multiple wines. It’s way cheaper than buying a fancy bottle at a restaurant.
3. It’s a Different Type of Fun. If you’re tired of the same old bars and breweries, this is a great way to switch things up.
4. You Actually Learn Stuff – Even if you don’t care about wine right now, it’s interesting to hear how it’s made. It’s also fascinating to understand what makes each one taste different. Plus, knowing a little bit about wine can be useful at some point. This is especially true when you’re trying to impress someone on a date.
5. Great for Groups – Whether it’s a birthday, a weekend trip, or just an excuse to get out of town, wine trails are a solid group activity.

Tips for Your First Wine Trail
If you’re thinking about trying one, here are a few things I wish I knew before I went:
• Plan Your Route – Pick a few wineries ahead of time so you’re not just aimlessly driving around. We started small by planning a weekend trip in Cape May with four different spots. We managed to do three. Our first stop was Hawk Haven in Rio Grande. After we went down to Willow Creek Winery in Cape May. The next day we headed northwest to Cedar Rose Vineyards in Millville on the way home.
• Figure Out Transportation – You’re going to be drinking, so plan suitably. Some places have shuttles, or you can take turns being the designated driver. Again, we only managed to go to three wineries. I was the driver, so I had to sip slowly.
• Eat Before You Go – Drinking wine on an empty stomach = bad idea. Some wineries have snacks, but it’s good to come prepared.
• Pace Yourself – The tastings are small, but they add up. Drink water in between so you don’t crash halfway through the day.
• You Don’t Have to Be Fancy – No one expects you to know anything about wine. Just try different kinds, see what you like, and enjoy the experience. If you want to know about what you’re sipping on just ask the servers or your tasting guide. They are usually quite knowledgeable with what their winery offers.
Final Thoughts
A wine trail is a mini road trip with great scenery, good drinks, and a fun vibe. You don’t need to be a wine snob to enjoy it—you just need to be open to trying something new. If you want an exciting way to spend a day, gather some friends. Go and explore a wine trail. You will be surprised at how much fun it is.
The great state of New Jersey has plenty. Especially this coming Valentine’s Day weekend. You can check out their website for more information. There are plenty of chocolate and wine trails available for you to enjoy.
Cheers!
